Burger treat in Nunica
On a recent trip back home from Muskegon, my better half Sandee and I were getting hungry and we agreed that a good old fashioned burger was what we were craving. I knew just the place, midway between Muskegon and Grand Rapids on what was once the main highway, the former US-16.
It was 6:00 and it was a full house at Turk’s Inn in Nunica. In spite of that, there was a small two seater booth in an intimate nook that we grabbed. It was a bit dark and reminded us of the kind of places we sought in our early stages of dating. Amazing, the effects of hunger. Then we sobered up and got back to the business of selecting a burger. We were both attracted to their mushroom onion burger, a ginormous succulent patty (our guess was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 pound) topped with melted Swiss cheese and sautéed mushrooms and sweet onions served on a Kaiser bun. Oh mama, our burgers were well worth the 10 to 15 minute wait. The meat was lean and juicy, the onions were sweet and tender, the cheese and mushrooms, just right. We did order sides of mayo which we thought made our burgers even more succulent.
When we finished, we were fully satisfied. Had we opted for a side, we would have been really stuffed. We noticed that many of our fellow diners had ordered the onion rings. Our delightful server said that they were made with the same sweet onions that graced our burgers. A must try on a return trip.
Our bill came to just $12.72 for our burgers and beverages. Not bad at all. As I mentioned, we arrived at the dinner hour to a packed house. We were impressed that all the servers really hustled. No moss grew under their feet. As we left, the vestibule was packed. “It’s worth the wait” I mentioned to one diner in waiting.
Oh yes, our server tried to entice us with a truly decadent dessert. Their house specialty is the chocolate cobbler: a warm brownie topped with two scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. We’ll definitely have to try this out sometime soon, but after a light dinner.
