25 brings high energy downtown
Anyone attempting to break into the saturated downtown GR food scene needs to have something that differentiates themselves from the competition. After a lunch time visit to the brand new 25 Kitchen & Bar, it is safe to say that they have definitely found a niche.
With the restaurant’s grand opening just last week, this modern eatery has hit the ground running.
Operated by Executive Chef Steve Brechting, 25 Kitchen & Bar sports an array of food and drink options that can be enjoyed by the casual lunch crowd or the late-night bar goer.
One of the unique aspects of 25 is that it occupies the old Margarita Grill building — right across from the Van Andel Arena. Notoriously known for its rough crowds and infamous connection to the death of a patron, Margarita Grill was forced to close its doors in August 2008. But through financial supporters and a passionate staff, the doors have re-opened in the form of 25 Kitchen & Bar.
Upon entering 25, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the times I spent at Margarita Grill. Of course, I visited only a few times, but the upgrades — wood floors, hand rails, stylish interior, extended bar, plasma TVs — made it seem like an entirely different venue.
Another subtle feature of 25 Kitchen & Bar is the manner which the number 25 is integrated into almost every aspect of the restaurant; 25 signature cocktails, 25 draft beers and 25 fresh wood fired pizzas.
Wherever there are 25 pizzas to choose from, I have to believe that the chef knows what he is doing. Some of the names were Arizona, Westsider, and Polish. Although the Arizona pizza sounded intriguing with its peanut butter topping, and I love a good sausage filled Polish pizza, I decided to go with the Thai pizza. It came covered with mozzarella cheese, teriyaki and soy sauce, peanuts and onions. The pizzas are all nine inches but don’t come with any sides.
My lunch mate decided on a honey glazed chicken sandwich with apple slices on ciabatta bread. He opted for a side of hand-cut fries instead of the regular pita chips. All sandwiches come with a pickle as well.
Because the last time I went out to eat and the wait was well over twenty minutes, I decided to time the interval between ordering and when the food was delivered to my table. To my surprise, it was 15 minutes on the dot. Any place that can deliver food in that time during the 12:00 hour deserves some respect. Granted 25 was not that busy; I still tip my hat to the chef.
When the food arrived, both of us were delightfully pleased. It looked delicious and I couldn’t wait to try my Thai pizza. The first bite was met with an abundance of flavor. The spice from the soy sauce, combined with the crunch of the peanuts and juicy teriyaki felt like I was eating at an actual Thai restaurant. I would definitely recommend this dish to anyone who wants to try something new.
As for my friend, he said the chicken was glazed with just enough honey and topped with plenty of apple slices to ensure a delicious taste. The fries were also cooked with just the right amount of crisp. For $9.00, who could complain?
With the hopes of re-establishing the tattered location of the former Margarita Grill, the new 25 Kitchen & Bar definitely has given itself a chance. The vast array of American and international flavor on the menu allows for dozens of delightful combinations. Overall, the ambiance and freshness that 25 radiates lets you feel like you are a part of something new, something hip, and something worth going to again.
